post Paperwork ….7/16/08

July 16th, 2008

Filed under: General — Deb @ 11:46 am

It has been awhile since my last entry, I’ve certainly missed this place to chat.  I miss seeing each of you at the store even more.  The entire staff is doing such a great job running things for me while I recuperate at home.  I am so blessed to have such wonderful caregivers.  Our thoughtful family members are taking turns when their not working to stay with me so bob can scoot to the store and be shopkeeper, as well as complete his endless list of things to do. Every night bob brings home a simple, yet powerful piece of paperwork for me.  I normally don’t like paperwork, it gets in the way of being creative, but this is different.  Everyday so many of you were asking about me and sending well wishes that the girls started posting a sheet of paper where you can leave your notes to me.  It is a special treat for me as I get to feel connected to you all again. It gives me a snapshot of the day and I picture all your faces as I read your notes.   I thank you for this paperwork, it has incredible healing powers.

post TMW will be closed for our summer vacation from 6/23 -6/30

June 22nd, 2008

Filed under: General — Deb @ 2:42 pm

TMW will be closed for our summer vacation from 6/23 -6/30.  We re-open on Tuesday, July first.

Some of the staff will be heading to Maine and New Hampshire so I am sure there will be some antiquing done.  Others are heading to Colorado to visit with our family.  My nephew Justin graduated from high school and there are some big doings going on out there to celebrate.  I am sure the girls will be hitting the beaches around here and I know Miss Alicia is going to six flags.  Miss Bre and Miss Kelsey recently got their first cars, so it is probably a safe bet that they will be tooling around in their new wheels or should I say their new “whips.”  This is the hip new lingo the kids are calling their cars.  Who knew??

As always, we will have some great “stuff” to put out for sale upon our return.  Stop by on or after the first of July to get your “fix” of TMW!  Just to entice you a bit, here are some store specials:

  • Get free tarts when you purchase one of the above mentioned tart melters.
  • In honor of the 4th of July, purchase any American flag or decorative flag and receive a FREE 18″ star! (while supplies last)

Have a wonderful week and we will see you on the first of July!  I hope your summer vacations are fun, safe, and relaxing.  Happy summer!

I just had to take a quick shot of this beautiful container garden that was given to us to grace the entrance to our shop.  A special thank you to Pam of Natural Designs right here in Foster, RI.  Pam specializes in container gardening.  You can take a class with Pam and create your own or have Pam work her magic and create one for you!

Visit their greenhouse at # 93 Moosup Valley Rd. in Foster, RI.  Tell them Bob & Deb sent you!

post Special Orders don’t upset us… 06/01/08

June 2nd, 2008

Filed under: General — Deb @ 5:18 pm

Ok, so I am dating myself a bit, but do you remember the jingle from the old Burger King commercial?  “Hold the pickle; hold the lettuce special orders don’t upset us….”  Well that applies here at TMW too.  Not only on our product lines on the main level of the store, but our crafters are always willing to go the extra mile to please the customer.  Even our antique dealers will take requests for special items that you may be looking for.  If they find it in their travels, they will bring it in and we will notify you.

I just had to share this story with you so you can see just how special you are to us.  Our good friend and customer Dawn collects the primitive dolls made by our very talented Pam.  Dawn had asked if Pam could make three dolls in memory of her three beloved Grand Mothers.  I asked Dawn what she remembered most about each of them and jotted it down for Pam.

Dawn’s memories of Grandma Ruth revolved around their summer visits to her cottage in Westerly.  Grandma Ruth always wore an apron and had short grey hair.  I don’t know if you can tell from the picture or not, but the apron for the Ruth doll has “she sell seashells by the seashore” stitched on it and the print on her dress is nautical.  Dawn’s memories of Grandma Dorothy are of her love of the color lilac and that she always wore an apron while teaching Dawn to cook & bake.  The doll is wonderful with her signature short grey hair, lilac dress and she is holding an armful of cooking and baking supplies.  Dawn spoke of her Nana Gladys having short black hair, always wearing an apron and that her favorite flower was the pansy.  Well, Pam came through with a loving rendition of Nana Gladys wearing a sweet dress with pansy print!  There was so much thought and love put into these dolls, as Pam does with all her creations.  Dawn now has three wonderful dolls to remember her beautiful grandmothers by. Let us know if there is something special you are looking for.  Remember, special orders don’t upset us; in fact many of them touch our heart as this one did.

“Hey Breanna, do you think I can work here when I grow up too?”

Gorgeous Miss Marley loves to shop at Things Made Wonderful with her Mom Jill.  Why wouldn’t she with all the attention she gets from all the staff at TMW.  Our associates Eden, Jaimi and Breanna were all having fun watching Marley while her Mom happily shopped.

Quotes about Mothers:“All that I am or ever hope to be, I owe to my angel Mother.” - Abraham Lincoln

“The most important thing a father can do for his children is to love their mother.” - David O. McKay

“A mother is not a person to lean on, but a person to make leaning unnecessary.” - Dorothy Canfield Fisher

Some Typical Motherly Advice:

· Make sure to change your underwear always; you never know when you’ll have an accident.

· Don’t make that face or it’ll solidify in that position.

· Be careful or else you’ll put your eye out.

· What if everyone jumped into a well? Would you do it, too?

· You have enough filth behind those ears to grow potatoes!

· C’mon close that door! Were you born in a barn?

· If you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything at all.

· Don’t put that thing in your mouth; you don’t know where it’s been!

Mothers Day Humor

· The mother of three notoriously unruly youngsters was asked whether or not she’d have children if she had it to do over again. “Yes,” she replied. “But not the same ones.”- David Finkelstein

· “The hand that rocks the cradle usually is attached to someone who isn’t getting enough sleep.”- John Fiebig

Happy Mothers Day to all the Moms!

Congrats to Kathryn O. of W. Warwick.  She was the lucky Mom who won the basket!

post Tracey’s Walk for Breast Cancer 04/06/08

April 6th, 2008

Filed under: Uncategorized, General — Deb @ 11:47 am

As you know, my sister Tracey works with us here at TMW.  She has decided to take on a big challenge, a 40 mile walk for breast cancer.

I am very proud of her commitment to this cause and support her in her efforts.  Things Made Wonderful will cover the registration fees for both she and her walking partner and long time friend, Jen.

 treacey.gif

Join us in wishing them well and if you would like to know more about the cause, follow the attached links.  The following is a note from Tracey:

Why Do I Want to Walk 40 Miles????

My friend Joanne greets her hubby the same way every day when she comes home from lunch, “Hello lover, I’m home.”
She has her own hello for me too as I sit on my butt in my driveway painting my latest “treasure” I just pulled out of someone’s trash. “Howdy neighbor” is how she greets me as I laugh at being caught again in this position that she once compared to a “kid in her sandbox”.
She brags “across the fence” to me about her kids and grandkids but never forgets to ask about my family. If you’re lucky enough to have her call your number at the place where she works, you’ll always leave with a smile on your face.
She has been my shoulder to lean/cry on in some tough times, the person I go to for advice (both gardening and life!)And she is one half of a fun loving, wisecracking couple that I am blessed to have in my life.
So, I’m going to walk 40 miles to try to show her how much I appreciate who she is and all that she does.

My Team

I’ll be walking with my sista from another mother Jen. And WOW I just figured out that we’ve been friends for 21 years!!! That’s more than half of our lives! I can’t think of anyone else I would want to do this with; she didn’t even hesitate for a second when I asked. So wish us luck and keep us in your thoughts on May 17 and 18th. Knowing you’re thinking of us will get us to the end! We appreciate any support you can give!

Don’t forget that company donations of $100 or more will get their business name/website on our team t-shirts! As I prepare for this exciting event, I plan to update my page frequently so that all my supporters can follow my progress, so please visit often (link provided below) While you’re there, you might want to spend some time on the site to find out more information on why this event is so important, and the organizations and people that will be helped by the money we all raise.
Thank you in advance.

post Spring Cleaning….. 04/03/08

Spring Cleaning…..

Now don’t worry, it is not what you are thinking.  I am not going to be talking about dusting, vacuuming and washing windows (that’s Bob’s job.)

My kind of spring cleaning is way more fun than that!  I am doing some cleaning of a few lines, and I am starting with the lighting department.

If you are in the market for a nice wood turned chandelier or maybe some wall sconces for the bathroom, then head on over.  Have I got a deal for you!  I am bringing in a new line of lighting and expanding an existing line, so we will need some room to showcase them.  This means nice bargains for you! Look for the special spring cleaning tags and enjoy 20% off the marked price AND….. if you are a Country Club member (and really, who isn’t these days?)  you still get your bonus points! The tags look like this:

cleantag.jpg I will be looking for other lines to Spring clean, so be on the look out for those cute tags.  Put down your dusting cloths and come on down for some great buys!

One of our wonderful customers, Miss Meg sent this in.  I hope you enjoy it too.  Below is a poem Audrey Hepburn wrote
when asked to share her ‘beauty tips.’

It was read at her funeral years later.

 For attractive lips ,
speak words of kindness…

For lovely eyes ,
seek out the good in people.

For a slim figure ,
share your food with the hungry
.

For beautiful hair ,
let a child run his/her fingers through it once a day.

For poise ,
walk with the knowledge that you never walk alone…

People, even more than things, have to be restored,
renewed, revived, reclaimed, and redeemed;

never throw out anyone.
